Douglas is calling for ballplayers, or maybe softball players, to fill out two rosters for Soldiers Field's 80th anniversary game this Saturday.

DOUGLAS -- Recreation and community sports news from the past week centered on the Select Board's September 15 meeting.

COMMUNITY -- The Board of Selectmen said Soldiers Field's 80th anniversary event kicks off this Saturday, with a sign unveiling at 2 p.m. followed by a ceremonial ballgame starting at 2:30 p.m. Board members said organizers have lined up about eight players so far and are hoping to reach 20 to 24 to fill two teams, and that they have had little response yet from a proposed opposing team referred to in the meeting as "Mugville." Facing a shortage of players "with or without baseball skills," board members floated turning the contest into a co-ed softball game instead of baseball to broaden participation.

Separately, the Select Board approved a road-use request for the Mid-State Massive Ultra Trail Race, set for Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11. Race organizers told the board it is the eighth year of the race itself, which runs along the Mid-State Trail during the trail's 100th anniversary year. Board members said local public safety departments raised no issues with the road closures and that the race organizers submitted what officials called "a great packet" ahead of the vote.

No Douglas High School games were reported for the period, and no new registration, coaching or field updates were reported this week by Douglas Youth Soccer or the Douglas Youth Baseball and Softball League beyond what those organizations had already posted in prior weeks.
