Douglas Select Board approved a holiday event license, a cemetery grant, and a new crosswalk striping standard at its July 21 meeting. The board voted 5-0 to grant an entertainment license to the Douglas Common Preservation Society for its November 28 holiday lighting celebration at the Douglas Common, featuring a restructured 4 p.m. tree lighting and Santa arrival, followed by a children's DJ program through 6 p.m. — the event's third consecutive year. The board separately accepted a $2,620 recurring grant from the Greater Worcester Community Foundation for the Douglas Center Cemetery Preservation Fund, also 5-0.

Town official Bob Menard, presenting on behalf of the safety committee, secured unanimous board approval for a longitudinal-bar crosswalk design — 18-inch white stripes with 18-inch gaps, 6 feet in length — to be installed at five crosswalks on Depot Street before final paving, with the highway department's Adam set to paint a sample as early as the following Monday. Menard noted the impetus: "Not one set of crosswalks was the same as the other sets. We have as many variations as we have our employees." If the Depot Street installation proves effective, the highway department will apply the standard town-wide on its existing twice-yearly crosswalk painting schedule.
