Agricultural Commission Adopts Mission Statement

Other Committee 2026-09-10 Part 2 · Meeting of September 10, 2026

Douglas Agricultural Commission adopts its first mission statement, eyes former VFW lot for a community garden. Member David's draft, committing the panel to "support, promote, and protect" the town's farming heritage, passed by unanimous voice vote, seconded by member Tim. The commission is weighing the demolished VFW property near the town common for a garden, pending soil testing for lead or asbestos and confirmation of water access, with a target opening of spring 2027.

Members floated rough plot fees, citing a Marlborough garden's model of $10 monthly for compost access or roughly $200 a year for a full plot. The commission also plans to invite a town finance staffer, named alternately "Jean" and "Gene" in discussion, to help set up separate donation accounts for the garden, signage and merchandise, with one member calling the approach "easier to track" and more transparent for donors. The next meeting is October 8.
