Douglas Historical Commission Completes Downtown Property Survey Review, Sets December Meeting

DOUGLAS — October 3, 2025 — Douglas Historical Commission finishes block-by-block downtown property review, eyes December meeting to sort results. The commission, chaired by Rose Acadoya-Lavalli, completed a street-by-street review of dozens of properties across Manchog, North, Mechanic, Martin, Orchard Place, Pleasant, School, and Gilboa streets at its October 3 meeting, categorizing each for a potential downtown historic district inventory. Members identified mill housing, adaptive reuse, Greek Revival streetscape, and post-World War II architecture as the survey's emerging themes, and agreed to group several clusters — including four near-identical mill workers' houses at 31 through 37 North Street and the Orchard Place Schuster-family properties — into single narrative units. The commission will not reconvene until December 12, when Acadoya-Lavalli expects to present a reorganized working document sorting properties by contributing status, historical story, and time period; she said she cannot begin that work until after October 25. Separately, Acadoya-Lavalli said she plans to file a Douglas Cultural Council grant application by October 16 to fund a historical sign at Soldiers Field, tied to a planned 80th-anniversary event in 2026 commemorating the 1946 mill baseball season.
