ADA panel to draft memo warning boards on access duty
Other Committee 2026-09-02 Part 2 · Meeting of September 2, 2026
Douglas ADA Commission to warn town boards on accessibility duty. Members agreed to draft a memo notifying all town boards and committees of their legal obligation to provide an "equivalent experience" at town-sponsored events, citing a recent purchase of two non-wheelchair-accessible picnic tables and an upcoming Historical Commission event at Soldiers Field planned without the panel's input. A member identified as Eric, who said his position carries authority to mandate ADA staff training, explained the standard: "The town is obligated in all of our events and functions... to provide some sort of ability to participate." Oktoberfest organizers agreed to add six accessible parking spaces at the town's newer school this year, but the commission tabled larger requests until 2027.
Members also advanced plans for a short, paper-based community accessibility survey and approved prior minutes unanimously.
